Choose the backing-plate size, then the polishing stage
A 5.5-inch foam face can fit a 5-inch / 125mm backing plate; the matching 6.5-inch version is listed for a 6-inch / 150mm plate. Those are two different measurements, not interchangeable pad sizes.
Start with the plate fitted to your machine. Then choose a cutting pad for compound work or a finishing pad for the final polishing stage. The examples below identify specific packs rather than treating every SPTA pad of one colour as identical.

SPTA foam pads: face size and backing-plate fit
These selected UK listings each contain three foam pads with hook-and-loop attachment. Check your machine's permitted pad size and polishing mode as well as the plate diameter.

AI-generated material examples, not photographs of the linked SPTA packs. Surface texture helps distinguish foam from wool; appearance alone does not establish cutting grade.

Foam for a defined polishing stage
Foam includes cutting and finishing grades. For a finishing pass, match the pad to your polish. A cutting label does not make it suitable for every defect: check the selected pack's intended stage and backing-plate size, then test a small section first.
The linked 5-inch wool pack contains purple heavy-cut, beige medium-cut and orange light-cut pads. These roles apply to that set, not the foam range. Check the attachment dimensions and your machine's instructions before choosing the pack for your setup.
The 2026 T1 Green listing specifies a 5-inch backing plate. The 125mm-plate foam packs above are the relevant size group to investigate; also confirm the permitted pad diameter, attachment and DA use. We have not tested these combinations together.
S5: use its smaller plate sizes
The S5 Black kit uses 1-, 2- and 3-inch plates with shaft-specific limits. The 5.5- and 6.5-inch foam pads in this table are not listed for those plates. Look for pads specified for the selected S5 plate and shaft instead.
Three checks before buying or polishing
Use the selected pack, not colour alone
SPTA ranges and retailer selectors use different grade labels. The orange listing checked here says T40 in its title and T60 in its selector. Match the pack, stated job and dimensions rather than relying on a universal colour or T-code scale.
Match the liquid and paint condition
Follow the polish or compound's pad guidance and test a small section first. These pad packs are not a complete machine-and-compound kit. More cut is not automatically better for your paint.
Keep pads clean during use
The checked foam listings advise removing abrasive build-up during work and cleaning afterwards, without solvents or alkaline cleaners. Follow the specific pad's care instructions before reusing it.
